Advocacy for Africa - HIV/AIDS in Souther Africa
ADVOCACY
FOR AFRICA |
|
South Africa remains one of the world's nations most deeply devastated by HIV/AIDS. As much as 21% of the nation's population is infected with the disease and more are being infected each day. The persistent spread of HIV in South Africa is caused by several factors, including poverty, sexual abuse and violence, gender inequality, poor education on the sexual transmission of diseases, and government resistance and inaction.

Newsreel films on AIDS
- STATE
OF DENIAL
State of Denial puts human faces behind the statistics of AIDS-related
deaths in South Africa by presenting a cross-section of people affected
by the epidemic. The film shows how HIV-infected persons must fight
not only the disease, but also the greed of international pharmaceutical
companies and the incomprehensible inactivity of their government.
- STEPS
FOR THE FUTURE
From
a special collaboration between filmmakers from Southern Africa (South
Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Zambia, Lesotho) and broadcasters
from the North (Finland, Canada, Denmark, France) comes a unique collection
of 33 films (in 25 cassettes). Steps for the Future--through
stories that are positive, provocative, humorous and brave--illustrates
how individuals cope with their lives and how societies change under
the impact of HIV/AIDS.
- EVERYONE'S
CHILD
Through the tragic story of one Zimbabwean family devastated by AIDS,
this film challenges Africans to reaffirm their tradition that an orphan
becomes "Everyone's Child." An eloquent call for action on
behalf of Africa's millions of parentless children.
