ZORA NEALE HURSTON: JUMP AT THE SUN
|
"Jump at the Sun does a fine job outlining Hurston's life and her near miraculous achievements." - New York Times |
Zora Neale Hurston was one of the leading figures in the Harlem Renaissance. Although her books were forgotten for decades, her works, especially her masterpiece THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD, were rediscovered in the 1970's and are now widely taught in college and high school English classes. Her remarkable accomplishments include research into African American folklore, music, and spiritual practices in the American South, as well as voodoo in Haiti. She is now recognized as a pioneer in the fields of cultural and visual anthropology. |
This documentary looks beneath the urban explosion in Newark, New Jersey in July 1967, to reveal the long-standing racial, economic, and political forces behind inner city poverty, conditions which still exist today.
Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, California Newsreel is the oldest non-profit documentary production and distribution center in the country. Many of our acclaimed recent releases explore race in America, African American life and history, health inequities, Africa and the changing global economy.
